Kindergarten and Children's Development

Rudolf Steiner spoke of three phases or epochs of play.

The first phase of a child's life, from birth to around the seventh year, is a time of remarkable physical growth, culminating in the change of teeth. This is a time of action and imitation.

Now is the time for creativity, and the tremendous capacity to focus entirely on the game or world a child creates. At Little Sophia we foster this will and direction, bringing focus and joy to play and the lessons it teaches.

When the time comes for intellectual activity, this focus and joy will be an innate part of their learning.

Little Sophia's programmes help the imagination unfold through play. Self directed, active play, rather than externally planned and led activities, encourage the imagination to direct and develop the child's ability to learn.

Play lets the child develop the ability to concentrate, think creatively, and gives the luxury of being thoroughly absorbed in an endeavour.

Children generate their own will and direction, bringing focus and joy to play and the lesson it teaches. Play makes everything come alive, and gives an experienced approach to the world to develop concentration, focus and creativity.

It is important that children can pass through each stage, rather than focus on intellectual content or abstractions too early. In Kindergarten we see the second and third stages of play.
